We tested 13 extra-virgin olive oils sold in larger containers — a great value for folks who use oil up quickly. We loved Corto Truly Extra Virgin Olive Oil FlavorLock Box.
If you go through olive oil like it’s your job, you may want to consider getting the Corto Truly Extra Virgin Olive Oil FlavorLock Box, which is sold in a 3-liter container. The oil is held in a special laminated plastic bag within a cardboard box to keep oxygen out and prevent the oil from oxidizing, which is especially important when buying in larger quantities.
Corto olive oil, produced in California from a blend of Arbequina, Arbosana, and Koroneiki olives, was one of the fruitiest oils we tried, with testers loving its green banana aroma. The oil is mildly peppery at first, but the pungency grows more intense after swallowing, and is almost reminiscent of cayenne pepper. Some testers wished it were a bit more bitter, but, collectively, we enjoyed that its tropical notes were balanced with some herbaceousness and a pleasant grassy aftertaste. Corto Truly oil received a gold medal in the 2024 International Olive Oil Council contest.
As with all bag-in-box containers, the pour spout makes it easy to dispense the oil, but you’ll probably find it more convenient to decant it into a smaller bottle (preferably one that’s dark glass with a tight-sealing lid) so it’s more manageable to use while cooking.
